Cortez Gets 100 Years in Rape, Torture, Murder in Mahmoudiya

The Women's Media Center - Milon Nagi wraps this week’s WMC coverage from Fort Campbell, Kentucky, of the court-martial of Sgt. Paul Cortez. The judge sentenced Cortez to 100 years in prison and a dishonorable discharge. At the sentencing hearing, Cortez wept as he described a pack of soldiers on a bloody rampage that ended with the deaths of the 14-year-old Abeer Qassim Hamza al-Janabi and her parents and sister last March. Earlier this week, Helen Zia, a member of the board of the Women’s Media Center and the author of Asian American Dreams: The Emergence of an American People, filed reports that covered the plea deal that got Cortez out of a death sentence as well as the stresses for anti-war activists in an Army town.
